I Have a Post Apocalyptic Online Friend C19.1

Hey, first of all, thanks for reading my lousy Machine Translation. To be honest, I’d really like it if you guys corrected the mistakes I made. But please speak nicely and politely. My heart is not strong enough to read your too-harsh comments. Have a nice day. 🙂

Chapter 19. Part 1

“We did it!”

Zhou An’an gripped the Unimog’s steering wheel, scarcely believing their victory had come so swiftly.

What was even more surprising was that they hadn’t lost the truck by leaving the keys behind—and their opponents, after stealing it, had made the exact same mistake. This saved Zhou An’an and Lu Yuan the trouble of even searching for the keys; they could simply climb in and drive away.

Lu Yuan was fiddling with the buttons on the control console. After getting a rough idea of how everything worked, he said, “Let’s drive this to a safe place, take stock of what’s inside, figure out what we need to resupply, and then get moving.”

He knew their enemies’ methods all too well. If even one of them made it back alive, they would inevitably return with reinforcements, bent on total annihilation.

Outnumbered, their best bet was to leave as quickly as possible.

Zhou An’an, assuming he was worried about the mutated plants, nodded in agreement.

She had to admit, her driving skills had improved dramatically since the apocalypse. Before, she’d been too timid to touch a car even after getting her license, and it had taken her a full month of practice just to get used to the bus. Now, the moment she sat in the driver’s seat, she felt confident she could tame even the most cumbersome beast.

The two drove off in their captured “trophy.” An hour later, they pulled into a long-abandoned construction site.

Zombies were scarce here, with only seven or eight wandering aimlessly nearby—posing no threat to them.

Ignoring the zombies outside, the two parked the truck and began their inspection.

A narrow doorway connected the driver’s cabin to the rear compartment. Lu Yuan had to hunch over to squeeze through.

Immediately adjacent to the cabin were a bathroom and a washer-dryer unit. The truck was fitted with an 800-liter water tank—smaller than the one on the bus, but still ample for two people.

Beyond that lay the kitchen. One side featured a stove and sink, with a built-in refrigerator and dishwasher tucked into the cabinets below. The other side had a foldable dining table and chairs.

Next to the kitchen was the living area, furnished with a table, a comfortable two-person sofa, and a 40-inch television mounted on the wall.

With no internet since the apocalypse, online streaming was impossible. However, Zhou An’an found ports on the back of the TV that could connect to phones and game consoles, meaning they could still watch shows and play games.

Beside the living area was the only other door in the compartment. It was nearly as thick as Zhou An’an’s palm, offering formidable protection—enemies would have a hard time breaking through.

Beyond the living room was a narrow hallway lined with storage cabinets, which held several sets of clothes and emergency supplies.

At the very back was a set of bunk beds—the only two beds in the entire compartment.

Zhou An’an pictured herself and Lu Yuan lying on them and couldn’t help but gnaw her fingernails in embarrassment.

Lu Yuan was rummaging through a cabinet when he suddenly grunted.

She immediately walked over. “What is it?”

He pulled out two guns and tossed one to her. “Good stuff.”

Zhou An’an knew nothing about real firearms but had played video games. It was a submachine gun, much heavier than the hunting rifle. She stumbled slightly under its weight before steadying herself.

The cabinet also contained plenty of ammunition and several handguns. She cautiously touched them; their solid, heavy feel was completely different from toys. Even just sitting there, they radiated danger.

“These things are really powerful, aren’t they?” Zhou An’an asked.

Lu Yuan nodded. “Powerful, yes, but also much harder to use. Don’t touch them unless absolutely necessary. When we get a chance, you’ll need proper training to get used to the recoil and make sure you don’t hurt yourself.”

She’d heard about recoil before and was very curious. “Is it really that dangerous?”

Lu Yuan loaded the gun for her, opened the window, and pointed at a nearby zombie. “Try shooting it.”

Having gained some confidence from her previous experience with the hunting rifle, Zhou An’an took the gun with assurance and said, “Alright.”

She struggled to aim the barrel at the zombie’s head. When she thought she had it lined up, she pulled the trigger.

BANG!

The deafening roar exploded next to her ear, which immediately started ringing. She felt like she’d only pulled the trigger once, but the gun fired several rounds uncontrollably. None of them hit the zombie; they all flew off to who-knows-where.

Is this the true power of a real gun?

Zhou An’an rubbed her ringing ear, staring out the window in disbelief.

Attracted by the noise, zombies began to swarm toward them.

Lu Yuan took the gun from her, effortlessly dispatched them all in a few quick bursts, and placed the weapon back in the cabinet. “Don’t rush it. We’ll practice slowly. You still have time.”

Zhou An’an sighed deeply. “Sigh… I thought I’d already gotten pretty strong.”

Compared to him, she was still leagues behind.

Lu Yuan patted her shoulder and walked over to check the instrument panel.

Inside were the vehicle’s main power switch and gauges for water, electricity, and fuel levels.

The electricity and fuel levels were ample, both over 80%, which would be more than enough to reach the desert. The water tank, however, was only at 40%. They would need to refill it before setting off and stock up on enough food for the desert journey.

Overall, the vehicle was in excellent condition. It was practically “move-in ready” for the two of them.

As the sky gradually darkened, they felt utterly exhausted from the day’s rollercoaster of events and decided to rest for the night, tackling the work tomorrow.

The refrigerator was stocked with plenty of raw ingredients: frozen jumbo shrimp, old hen, steaks, and more, all of high quality.

Too lazy to cook a full meal, Zhou An’an simply pan-fried two steaks and served them with a couple of cans of Coke. The warm, golden glow of the sunset streaming through the window added a special flavor to the simple dinner.

The scenery was so beautiful that even Lu Yuan’s beard seemed less scruffy.

Remembering the people who had been burned by the fire, Zhou An’an couldn’t help but ask him, “Didn’t you recognize that those people were also from the apocalypse? Is what we did… really okay?”

Lu Yuan deftly sliced his steak. “If you’re feeling soft-hearted, why don’t you consider whether they worried about what was ‘okay’ when they tried to steal the vehicle?”

“Who said I’m soft-hearted? They got what they deserved! I’m worried about you.”

Zhou An’an glanced at his green hat and thick beard, sensing there were still secrets she didn’t know. “You and they are all from the Doomsday Base. If the other three thousand people find out what happened today, they’ll surely hold it against you, right?”

Lu Yuan scoffed. “Do you think the Base is a kindergarten where everyone has to be harmonious and loving?”

Recalling things he’d said before, Zhou An’an became even more convinced that he, too, struggled with social skills.

She offered comfort proactively: “No matter what relationships are like at the Base, between the two of us, we must always help and trust each other.”

Lu Yuan had just speared a piece of meat with his fork. Hearing her words, he lowered it again.

“Are you sure?”

Zhou An’an blinked. “Is there a problem?”

“If one day, you discover I’m not the person you imagined me to be, would you still be willing to trust me?”
