Hey, first of all, thanks for reading my lousy Machine Translation. To be honest, I’d really like it if you guys corrected the mistakes I made. But please speak nicely and politely. My heart is not strong enough to read your too-harsh comments. Have a nice day. π

Once the bus turned onto the main road, it hurtled toward its destination.
Along the way, they frequently spotted fleeing vehicles and zombies that had once been villagers from nearby settlements.
Zhou An’an had seen her share of zombie movies and novels. In those stories, the undead were typically terrifying in appearance but slow-moving. Aside from their sheer numbers, high infectivity, and being hard to kill, they weren’t particularly formidable in combat. In a one-on-one fight, the protagonist almost always won.
But the zombies she saw on the road looked almost identical to normal people, save for some fresh wounds on their bodies.
What truly set them apart was their intense aggression. They behaved like rabid beasts, attacking any uninfected person they spotted with reckless abandon, even dropping to all fours to sprint.
Zhou An’an watched with her own eyes as several cars were overturned by such attacks.
Fortunately, the bus was large enough to be completely invulnerable to them.
Lu Yuan sat in the front passenger seat. At first, he critiqued her driving, but eventually, exhaustion seemed to catch up with him. He dozed off, his head bobbing up and down like a chicken pecking at grain.
He was different from Gu Zhao. While Gu Zhao was kind to her, a strong sense of distance always remained between them.
Lu Yuan had a much more casual air. Even when he said insulting things, like calling her “pig” the moment he saw her, it felt like friendly banter that she didn’t take to heart.
Zhou An’an turned up the heat slightly and focused on driving.
Three hours later, Lu Yuan woke up, clutching his stomach. “I’m starving,” he said.
“The food’s in the back,” Zhou An’an replied. “Here are the keys to the cabinet. Grab whatever you want.”
Lu Yuan went to the rear of the bus and rummaged around for a moment before emerging with a strip of cured pork, which he immediately tried to bite into.
Zhou An’an caught sight of him in the rearview mirror and quickly stopped him.
“What are you doing with that? It’s still raw! Eat something else.”
“Like what?” Lu Yuan asked.
Seeing no zombies nearby, she pulled the bus over to the side of the road and went to the back to pick out some food.
Following Lu Yuan’s instructions, she had stockpiled enough food for the two of them to last a month.
The supplies were divided into long-shelf-life and short-shelf-life items.
The short-shelf-life items were stored in the refrigerator, and they were meant to be eaten first.
She took out two apples, two cartons of fresh milk, a roasted duck, and two chocolate-filled croissants.
She had also stockpiled a rice cooker. As she placed the roasted duck inside to heat it, she caught Lu Yuan approaching out of the corner of her eye. “Don’t you dare complain,” she said quickly. “This thing barely uses any electricity. If you throw it out, I’ll fight you.”
Lu Yuan had vetoed the idea of a kitchen, so surely keeping a rice cooker wasn’t too much to ask?
But Lu Yuan wasn’t looking at the rice cooker. He pointed at the roasted duck and asked, “What’s that?”
“Roasted duck. A cooked duck. You’ve never seen one before?”
He shook his head.
She suddenly remembered he was born over a hundred years after the apocalypse and had lived his entire life in extreme cold. Many plants and animals couldn’t survive those temperatures, so food must have been incredibly scarce.
“What kind of food did you eat growing up?” Zhou An’an asked.
His answer could be counted on one hand. “Seal meat, bean porridge, flatbread. Mostly just those.”
She had already experienced the bean porridge. Though she hadn’t seen the other two, their names alone told her they had nothing to do with the word “gourmet.”
So the fried rice and salted egg he posted on his Moments that first time were considered top-tier delicacies in the post-apocalyptic era?
Poor kid, she thought, clicking her tongue in sympathy.
“Today, I’ll treat you to a New Year’s feast.”
Zhou An’an placed the roasted duck in the rice cooker, added a little water, and set it to steam.
A few minutes later, she lifted the lid. Hot steam, thick with aroma, rushed into their nostrils.
Lu Yuan, who usually strutted around as proudly as a rooster, finally lowered his crest. His eyes were glued to the duck.
Zhou An’an sensed she had found his weakness. She gloated inwardly but maintained a generous facade, tearing off a duck leg and placing it in his bowl. “Eat up,” she said.
Lu Yuan showed no hesitation. He grabbed the leg and stuffed it into his mouth.
Zhou An’an started gnawing on the other leg. To be honest, steaming was the wrong way to reheat roasted duck. The water had made the skin soggy and the meat limp, completely robbing it of its crispiness.
But before she could even take a second bite, Lu Yuan had already devoured his leg, bones and all.
Watching him attack the food like a starving wolf, Zhou An’an worried he might get addicted to chewing and take a bite out of he*. She quickly pushed the rest of the duck, rice cooker and all, toward him.
“Slow down, it’s all yours.”
As Lu Yuan resumed his feast, a chilling thought suddenly struck Zhou An’an. With food so scarce in the apocalypse, could they have… eaten people?
She shivered and dared to test him. “Are people tastier, or is duck tastier?”
Lu Yuan, mid-chew, rolled his eyes. “Want to know? Try taking a bite out of yourself.”
Looks like he hasn’t tried it… She breathed a sigh of relief, then sped up eating her own duck leg. If she didn’t hurry, even this little bit would be gone.
After finishing the roasted duck, Lu Yuan moved on to the croissants, devoured the apple in two or three bites, and downed the milk in one go. Finally, he leaned back in his chair and let out a long, satisfied burp.
“Full now? You can have this too.”
Zhou An’an handed her apple to him. In a flash, he’d devoured it, leaving only the core.
She beamed at him. “Am I good to you or what?”
Lu Yuan drawled, “Out of ten, I’ll give you an eight.”
“Where did the other two points go?”
“Deducted for your creepy smile.” He pointed at her nose. “Spit it out. What’s your motive?”
Zhou An’an was furious. “You’re the one with the creepy smile! Isn’t it natural to take care of a teammate? What motive could I possibly have?”
“Really?” He clearly didn’t believe her.
You always assume the worst of people because that is how your own mind works.”
