I Have a Post Apocalyptic Online Friend C7.1

Hey, first of all, thanks for reading my lousy Machine Translation. To be honest, I’d really like it if you guys corrected the mistakes I made. But please speak nicely and politely. My heart is not strong enough to read your too-harsh comments. Have a nice day. 🙂

Chapter 7. part 1

“A… a Doomsday Friend?”

The shock made her stutter.

Gu Zhao nodded. He straightened up, slipped one hand into his trouser pocket, and watched the crowds milling around them.

“Back in April, a lot of people found unfamiliar contacts mysteriously added to their phones. I assume you were one of them.”

His tone wasn’t a question but a statement of fact.

Zhou An’an began to understand why he had been so patient in helping her.

“You are too, aren’t you?”

Gu Zhao smiled faintly. “This isn’t a good place to talk. Let’s go to my car.”

His car was a deep blue Mercedes-Benz, a perfect match for his steady, low-key demeanor. It was parked in a nearby lot.

After helping Zhou An’an into the passenger seat, Gu Zhao closed her door and settled into the driver’s seat.

The car’s soundproofing was excellent, completely blocking out the noise from outside.

Normally, being alone with a man at such close quarters would have left Zhou An’an too nervous to speak.

But now, her mind was so preoccupied with what he’d just said that she barely noticed.

Gu Zhao spoke. “I guessed it the first time you came to my office. You’re definitely preparing for the apocalypse. Was this idea your teammate’s suggestion?”

Every word he said hit the mark. Zhou An’an nodded.

“After you make the money, what are your plans?” Gu Zhao asked.

Zhou An’an disliked sharing her personal affairs with outsiders, especially something this important. The fewer people who knew, the better. If someone with ulterior motives found out, it could lead to trouble.

But this wasn’t just anyone; it was Gu Zhao, who had helped her immensely.

She pressed her lips together and said, “We want to stockpile things that will be useful after the apocalypse, but we haven’t figured out the specifics yet.”

Gu Zhao took out his phone. “I’ll add you to a group. There are a lot of people in it who might be able to help you.”

What kind of group?

As Zhou An’an watched with a puzzled expression, Gu Zhao added her.

Her phone immediately buzzed with a notification. She tapped it open and saw the group name: “Countdown 76 (456).”

The first part was the group’s name, and the number in parentheses was the member count.

She didn’t need to ask what “Countdown 76” meant. It was the number of days left until the apocalypse.

What shocked her was the number of members.

Everyone in the group must be in the same situation as her. Over four hundred of them… How did they all connect?

Gu Zhao noticed her unspoken question and explained, “The day after that white light appeared, someone started secretly contacting everyone. I joined the group in May. According to data provided by the Doomsday Players, there should be 3,586 people like us, representing the 3,586 survivors from their world. This group is for people in our country, but most of the international ones have also been contacted.”

Zhou An’an asked in astonishment, “You’ve all connected… Are you planning something?”

Gu Zhao nodded, his expression serious.

“Initially, the Doomsday Players intended to cooperate with the government. They would provide the information, and the government would build shelters to face the apocalypse together. But conflicts arose later. The Doomsday Players believed that with over a hundred years of survival experience, they should be the ones to manage the shelters. However, every nation needed to maintain its own authority, so the cooperation failed.”

Zhou An’an gasped. “Don’t tell me you’re planning to build your own shelters?”

Gu Zhao looked at her with clear approval in his eyes.

“Exactly.”

“Is that a good idea? Isn’t it too radical? It wouldn’t be so bad to let the government manage them. They can run a whole country; a shelter should be no problem for them.”

“Doomsday is vastly different from peacetime. The experience the Doomsday Players have accumulated can make the shelters much safer.”

“What about your family? Are they with you?”

Gu Zhao shook his head. “My parents are steadfast people. They’ve decided to follow the government no matter what. It’s not necessarily a bad thing. You shouldn’t put all your eggs in one basket. If something happens to me in the future, at least they can survive. The same goes for them if something happens to them.”

Zhou An’an couldn’t quite understand their arrangement.

If she had family, she would never separate from them at a time like this. They would live or die together.

Gu Zhao glanced at her. “What about you? Will you join us?”

Zhou An’an was at a loss for words. After a moment’s thought, she said, “I need to ask my teammate what he thinks.”

Her personality wasn’t suited for communal living, and from what she’d seen of Lu Yuan’s temper, he wasn’t exactly the type to embrace unity and camaraderie either.

“Who’s your teammate?” Gu Zhao asked.

“His name is Lu Yuan. I think he’s just an ordinary person from the Survivor Base.”

She based this on Lu Yuan’s past conversations.

There were thousands of people like that, so Gu Zhao didn’t press further. He also didn’t rush to persuade her to agree. Instead, he said, “No matter what, we’re friends. If you run into any problems in the future, you can always ask me.”

Zhou An’an quickly replied, “Thank you!”

“By the way, there’s someone you should keep an eye on.”

Gu Zhao sent her a photo.

The photo showed a man. It looked like a mugshot from a foreign prison, with a dark gray brick wall in the background.

The man’s hair was a bit long and messy. His features were well-defined, but his expression was cynical and world-weary.

The photo showed the upper third of his body. He had broad shoulders and wore what looked like a uniform.

Zhou An’an asked, “Who is this?”

“A wanted criminal in the Doomsday World. His name is Chu Feng. He’s said to have lured a zombie horde that killed several hundred survivors. He’s a dangerous individual. If you see him, tell me immediately. We need to bring him under control. But…”

He changed the subject. “I suspect he’s already dead.”

“Why?”

“He escaped from the shelter’s prison. When he left, he had nothing but the clothes on his back. It’s impossible for someone to survive alone in the extreme cold.”

“Okay,” she nodded.

As long as his name wasn’t Lu Yuan, she wasn’t interested.

“An’an…” Gu Zhao’s tone was as if he were addressing a close friend. “I really hope we can all make it through this alive.”

After saying goodbye to Gu Zhao, Zhou An’an rode her electric scooter home.

On the way, Lu Yuan sent her a message: Still not done eating?

Zhou An’an was in a hurry to ride and couldn’t stop to type, so she started a voice call instead.

Once connected, she said in a conspiratorial tone, “I just found out something you’ll never guess.”

Lu Yuan: “Gu Zhao is actually your father’s illegitimate son.”

“Huh?”

“You’re actually Gu Zhao’s father’s illegitimate child.”

“…I’m being serious! Did you know? Gu Zhao, just like me, also has a Doomsday online friend!”

Lu Yuan just said, “Oh,” sounding completely uninterested.

Zhou An’an asked, “Aren’t you surprised?”

“All the survivors were matched with someone. There are probably several thousand of them. What’s so surprising about him being one of them?”

That was true…
