Rebellious Game C21.2

Hey, first of all, thanks for reading my lousy Machine Translation. To be honest, I’d really like it if you guys corrected the mistakes I made. But please speak nicely and politely. My heart is not strong enough to read your too-harsh comments. Have a nice day. 🙂

Chp21. part2

In this day and age, tenants like Little Zhou who pay rent on time and proactively are rare. It’s a real shame he’s not renewing.

In the afternoon, after a long day’s work, Zhu Lin invited Yun Xin and Zhou Rui to a barbecue, treating them as a housewarming celebration.

“No need to be so formal,” Yun Xin said. Having moved so many times, she had long since lost enthusiasm for housewarming rituals.

“We’re like family. No need for formalities,” Zhou Rui added.

“Yes, yes, you must let me treat you,” Zhu Lin insisted. “Yesterday, I took you to see the house, and it turned into you saving someone from drowning. I must treat you to a meal to calm your nerves.”

Hearing her words, Zhou Rui couldn’t refuse. He looked at Yun Xin. “What do you say?”

“Since we’re free anyway, let’s go together,” Yun Xin agreed.

“Great!” Zhu Lin whipped out her wallet to treat everyone. She was the happiest of the three. “I’ve been to that place several times, and the food is top-notch. You won’t be disappointed!”

“On a sweltering day like this, air conditioning, beer, and grilled skewers—that’s life!”

“Life…” Zhou Rui sighed softly.

He hadn’t enjoyed such a simple routine as grabbing skewers after work in a long time.

Life was like a mountain, sometimes crushing a person’s spirit in an instant.

Compared to before, the changes had been minor—just a few more expenses. Yet the life he’d been managing to sustain had suddenly become impossible to maintain.

Fortunately, the problem was resolved now.

He glanced at Zhu Lin and grinned. “You’re doomed. Now that I know you’re a rich girl, I’m going to eat you dry.”

“Eat! Eat as much as you want!” Zhu Lin declared boldly. “No one leaves this place until their stomachs are stuffed to bursting!”

Drinking soda in the summer was truly satisfying.

Especially when it was ice-cold, the bubbles fizzing and burbling as they rose. A single gulp sent a refreshing chill through the entire body.

Yun Xin took a bite of her grilled skewer and a gulp of ice-cold soda, feeling her mood lift.

Zhu Lin drank a can of beer. She wasn’t drunk, but her courage had grown, and she dared to say whatever came to mind. “Before this, I never would have imagined Yun Xin’s sixth sense was so strong. She told the kids not to go swimming, but they didn’t listen, and then something really happened.”

“Last time, she tried to stop Zhou Rui from going to the supermarket to pick up trash, but he didn’t listen either. He ended up getting beaten up and came back with bruises.”

“Yun Xin, how do you know everything?!”

This was the first time Zhou Rui had heard that Yun Xin had tried to stop him before he got beaten up. He tried to recall. “Really?”

“Yes,” Yun Xin told him. “You ran off too quickly. I hadn’t even finished speaking when you took off.”

Zhou Rui laughed awkwardly. “I must have really not heard you then. I have no memory of it at all.”

“I wish I had a sixth sense,” Zhu Lin said, resting her chin in her hand. “I want to win the lottery.”

Zhou Rui: “…You’re already so rich. Why do you still want to win the lottery?”

Zhu Lin retorted fiercely, “That’s not my money, it’s my parents’. There’s a difference between having money and having your own money. I want to be rich enough not to have to ask my parents for anything.”

Yun Xin sighed helplessly. “My sixth sense doesn’t help with winning the lottery. I’ve never won anything.”

“It’s no wonder…” Zhu Lin said, disappointed.

As they chatted, a dog suddenly began barking wildly outside the door.

Zhu Lin turned toward the sound and saw a small yellow dog, now agitated and restless. It barked and whined, even trying to break free from its leash and run away.

“I used to want to get a dog too,” Zhu Lin suddenly remembered. “But puppies bark too much and are always snapping at me. After that, I was too scared to mention it again.”

Yun Xin exchanged a look with Zhou Rui: Is she drunk?

Zhou Rui hesitated slightly: Probably?

Yun Xin blinked: What do we do now?

Zhou Rui: …Let her talk?

She’s just venting. It’s not a big deal.

Unexpectedly, Zhu Lin changed the subject. “Lately, I feel like I’m living in a disaster movie. Suffocation deaths in strollers, heatstroke and dehydration, children drowning… So when I saw that dog barking wildly, my first thought was that animals sense earthquakes in advance and get agitated. Is the world going crazy, or am I the one who’s lost it?”

Unable to find an answer, Zhu Lin popped open another beer and took a long, gloomy swig.
