Rebellious Game C15.1

Hey, first of all, thanks for reading my lousy Machine Translation. To be honest, I’d really like it if you guys corrected the mistakes I made. But please speak nicely and politely. My heart is not strong enough to read your too-harsh comments. Have a nice day. 🙂

Chp15. part1

“Think harder! Besides the date being ‘today’ and the location being ‘the apartment building,’ what other crucial information do you have?” The colleagues patrolled back and forth, finding nothing amiss. The bodyguard beside him worries too, relentlessly grilling Wu Peng for answers.

Wu Peng was on the verge of losing his mind.

Normally, his sixth sense acted like a mischievous child, suddenly tossing him scraps of paper with disjointed phrases written on them, fragments of meaning.

He desperately wanted to understand what was happening!

But no matter how hard he strained to think, his sixth sense remained stubbornly silent. What else could he do?

Wu Peng wished he could knock himself unconscious just to escape the bodyguard’s relentless questioning.

After another agonizing stretch, Wu Peng finally snapped. “Shut up! Ask again and I’ll kill myself!”

The bodyguard fell silent, stunned.

“Room 406, 9 PM. Send someone to check it out,” Yun Xin instructed.

The bodyguard froze for a moment, then immediately mobilized a team to investigate.

After dinner, Old Liu boiled a small kettle of water as usual and lay on the bed early.

He had planned it all perfectly, read a bit before bed to help him fall asleep, boil water before bed and keep it warm in the kettle so he could have a drink when he woke up during the night.

But as he read, his eyelids grew heavier and heavier. Accompanied by the sound of the boiling water, he slowly drifted off to sleep.

If it had been a modern electric kettle, it wouldn’t have been a problem. These newer models have safety features that automatically shut off the power once the water boils.

However, Old Liu was a traditionalist, accustomed to using an old-fashioned kettle. This older model required manual shutdown to stop heating.

Worse still, some electric kettles whistle when the water boils. But Old Liu’s kettle was silent, giving no warning whatsoever.

As the water evaporated, the kettle boiled dry and burned through. Flames erupted, gradually spreading to the surrounding furniture. Just then, two night watchmen entered the room. Seeing the fire, they swiftly removed their jackets and smothered the flames.

After extinguishing the fire, one of the watchmen, still shaken, exclaimed, “My God, we nearly had a disaster!”

The other sniffed the air intently, uncertain. “Am I imagining things, or is there a faint smell of alcohol in here?”

“Alcohol? I don’t smell anything,” his colleague replied, sniffing the air intently but detecting nothing.

“Yes, the smell is faint. Wait, let me check.” Relying on his keen sense of smell, the night patrolman rummaged through the back of the wardrobe and pulled out two bottles of white liquor.

Imagining the scenario, the night patrolman felt a chill run down his spine. “First, the electric kettle burned dry and caught fire. Then, after setting the wooden table and cabinet ablaze, the white liquor would have fueled the flames. If we hadn’t arrived early tonight, what would have been left by morning?”

His colleague was even more speechless. “The medical records say the old man’s liver is failing… Why would he steal alcohol with a condition like that? Is he trying to kill himself?”

“Or… could it be that his liver failed ‘because’ he couldn’t quit drinking?” the night patrol officer mused.

The two men exchanged uneasy glances, occasionally glancing at the elderly man, who was sleeping soundly through all the commotion. For a long moment, neither could find the words to speak.

Receiving the notification, Yun Xin knew the immediate danger had passed.

Shortly after, the bodyguard received a report from his colleagues confirming that the fire had been extinguished in time.

The bodyguard looked at Yun Xin in astonishment, his expression practically asking, How did you know?

Upon further reflection, it occurred to Yun Xin that these two individuals possessed extraordinary abilities, making it unsurprising that they could sense impending danger. She decided against probing further.

By scrutinizing all the elderly residents, Yun Xin thought, identifying the one destined to die first, and sending someone to monitor them beforehand, we can nip the accident in the bud.

Over the next two days, the elderly residents continued to experience a series of accidents. The sheer frequency and bizarre nature of these incidents constantly defied everyone’s imagination.

Despite Yun Xin and Wu Peng’s repeated warnings, and the police’s diligent cooperation, there were inevitably moments when oversight occurred. Often, a single lapse in vigilance would result in the loss of several elderly residents.

Worse still, after three consecutive days of heightened tension and insufficient rest, everyone’s energy levels had plummeted far below their initial vigor.

It was during this time that Yun Xin realized the nursing home was severely understaffed.

While every position appeared to be fully staffed on paper, when considering 24-hour coverage with two shifts — day and night — the manpower shortage became glaringly apparent.

Moreover, the Dean’s initial email had been nothing more than a ruse to lure Yun Xin and Wu Peng to the facility. The information it contained couldn’t be taken at face value.

For instance, the supposed caregiver shifts were listed as 8 AM to 5 PM. But with so many staff members working overtime and going the extra mile to protect the elderly, how could anyone possibly justify leaving precisely on time?

Wu Peng felt uncomfortable.
