Rebellious Game C11.1

Hey, first of all, thanks for reading my lousy Machine Translation. To be honest, I’d really like it if you guys corrected the mistakes I made. But please speak nicely and politely. My heart is not strong enough to read your too-harsh comments. Have a nice day. 🙂

Chp11. part1

The elderly residents immediately began chattering among themselves.

“Poor Old Yang,” one said. “His wife passed away long ago. He raised his son all by himself, playing both father and mother. Just when his son got married and he retired, he was diagnosed with a serious illness.”

“He’d mentioned several times that he didn’t want to live anymore, the illness was too painful. But his son was so filial, promising to spend any amount to cure him.”

“I remember thinking at the time, ‘With such a devoted son, Old Yang’s life hasn’t been in vain.'”

Suddenly, another resident spat in disgust. “Filial? That son’s just after Old Yang’s retirement money! A monthly pension of ten thousand yuan, after deducting all the miscellaneous expenses, leaves more than the son’s entire monthly salary!”

“I happened to be passing by Old Yang’s room that day. The door was slightly ajar, and I heard everything clearly. His son was kneeling on the floor, wailing about how expensive it was to raise a child, how he had mortgage payments and car loans, and how his wife loved buying luxury goods, spending her entire salary each month. Without Old Yang’s financial support, he claimed he couldn’t possibly survive.”

“The implication was clear: Old Yang had to hang on for two more years. Once his son’s financial burdens eased, Old Yang could die if he still wanted to, and his son wouldn’t stop him.”

“They always say, ‘Raise children to provide for your old age,’ but when you’re old, you can’t even decide when to die!”

The other elderly residents were stunned by this revelation.

“Old Yang was suffering from illness and wanted to end his life long ago. His son is forcing him to stay alive just for the retirement benefits? Is that even possible?”

“Old Yang raised his son single-handedly. Now that his son and daughter-in-law have two incomes, they still can’t make ends meet?”

“More money, more ways to spend it; less money, simpler living. How can they be struggling so much?”

“Old Yang must have been bottling up his pain for too long. He couldn’t take it anymore and jumped. But what a cruel twist of fate- he landed on a passerby!”

“This just proves why you should never throw trash from high places. Not even yourself! You’ll only cause trouble for others.”

The elderly residents sighed deeply, mourning both Old Yang and the innocent passerby who lost their life.

Yun Xin watched for a while before quietly leaving.

Six elderly residents were bedridden and unable to get up. Yun Xin made several trips to deliver meals to each of them.

Finally, she couldn’t help but ask, “Why not use a small cart to deliver all the meals at once?”

The head chef explained, “Each patient has different dietary restrictions. Delivering all the meals together increases the risk of errors.”

“After packing the meals and soup, we could write the room numbers on the plastic bags with a marker,” Yun Xin suggested. “Or prepare meals that everyone can eat? That would be safer.”

“Absolutely not,” the head chef refused.

Yun Xin was about to argue further when the chef glared at her. “Are you trying to slack off and avoid work?”

“No,” Yun Xin denied.

“Then work harder and talk less!” The chef gruffly chased Yun Xin off to eat.

By the time Yun Xin finished her duties, it was already 1 p.m. The cafeteria was nearly empty.

She casually selected two dishes and ate them with rice.

The chef’s skills lived up to the senior caregiver’s praise. The braised pork belly was rich yet not greasy, and the savory broth mixed with rice made for a satisfying meal.

Perhaps due to the large number of elderly residents, many dishes were prepared mildly seasoned. However, considering the staff also needed to eat, a few meat-heavy dishes catered to younger appetites were also available.

This way, everyone would be satisfied.

After finishing her meal, Yun Xin packed a few Glutinous Rice and Shaomai as snacks.

As she was walking out, someone stumbled and fell in front of her.

Yun Xin instinctively reached out to steady the person.

“I’m so sorry! I twisted my ankle while walking,” the person apologized profusely.

Yun Xin recognized him- it was Wu Peng, the man who had applied for the caregiver position alongside her.

“Be careful,” Yun Xin said, stepping aside to continue walking out.

Once she was outside the cafeteria and in a secluded corner, she opened her right hand to reveal a small note. Wu Peng had slipped it into her palm during his stumble.

The note contained a few hastily scrawled words: “Meet me behind the warehouse. I need to talk to you.”

After reading the note, Yun Xin tore it up and began strolling around the Nursing Home, pretending to familiarize herself with the surroundings. Eventually, she wandered over to the warehouse.

“What took you so long? I thought you weren’t coming!” Wu Peng greeted Yun Xin like a long-lost relative, his words tumbling out in a rush. “Listen, this Nursing Home is seriously weird!”

“What’s wrong?” Yun Xin asked.

“Didn’t someone jump from the building earlier? They even killed someone else!” Wu Peng exclaimed, his voice trembling with panic. “Later, I was talking to one of the elderly residents. She got tired and fell asleep, so I quietly slipped out.”

“But then- half an hour later, when I went to wake her up for dinner, I saw a venomous snake coiled by the window! It was this long and this thick!” Wu Peng gestured wildly, clearly shaken to his core.

Yun Xin gasped. “Are you sure it was venomous?”

“Absolutely! And it bit the old woman! I mustered the courage to touch her- she wasn’t breathing and had no pulse.” Wu Peng was on the verge of hysteria. “How can two accidents happen in the same place in one day? There’s definitely something wrong with this nursing home!”

“Then I remembered something… I never even applied to this nursing home! Yet they suddenly emailed me, saying my resume had passed the initial screening and an interview was scheduled…”

“I was terrified and tried to sneak out, but someone was guarding the entrance, preventing anyone from leaving without permission. They said staff and residents alike had to submit a written request, and only after the Dean approved it could they leave.”

“Isn’t that just a disguised form of house arrest?!”

Yun Xin was pondering another question. “Why was there a venomous snake in the apartment building? How did it get in?”

“Because the old woman said she felt stuffy and told me to open the window!” Wu Peng’s voice cracked with renewed panic. “I opened the window and closed the screen, but she wasn’t satisfied. She insisted it was still stuffy and made me open the screen too!”

The disaster struck the moment he let his guard down.

“What happened afterward?” Yun Xin asked.

“What else could we do? They removed the body, killed the snake, and claimed the old woman had passed away peacefully in her sleep to avoid causing panic… Wait, aren’t you even a little shocked?” Wu Peng nearly started doubting himself. Am I just too easily frightened? he wondered. Why is this girl so calm after hearing all this?

Yun Xin admitted, “I’ve sent out a lot of resumes, but I generally know which companies and positions I’ve applied for. When I received the email, I immediately realized I hadn’t applied to the Rehabilitation Nursing Home- they contacted me first.”

“And you still dared to come for the interview?” Wu Peng was stunned.

“These days, jobs are hard to come by. It’s not easy to find a boss willing to hire me,” Yun Xin explained.

Wu Peng stared at Yun Xin as if she were insane, speechless for a long moment.
